Question:

How many here believe that the lore of a game is important? I want to see hands, please, and tell me why or why not.

Re: Question:

Lore is very important. Gives you a feel fo what you are about to get into. That being said, I don't want to have to read the lore when you could fill a LOTR saga. Get me excited and point me in the right direction.

Re: Question:

I think lore is important to MMO's when it's not too complex and cumbersome. In EQ, I feel like the lore has gone from a really interesting backstory that validates certain aspects of gameplay and ties it all together to an irrelavent rambling that is so convoluted and meaningless that I don't even find it entertaining.

Re: Question:

I agree that everquest just became too much to keep track of. Part of it is the fact that every time they revamped a zone or made new quests they would just make stuff up without concern for the actual lore in the game.

For many games out right now lore isnt' really a consideration. It's all about the quest, the experience and the loot. I hope Vanguard can do things a little differently and maybe put some fresh idea's into the game.

You know, maybe like a dungeon or new area you COULD NOT SEE if you hadn't found reference for it in a book, tome or scroll. I've always thought that would be a perfect way to get people involved in the lore of a game. You could do the same thing to hide locations of items, armor, crafting recipe's, etc and use a randomization formula so that each persons "location" to find the above mentioned things would be different so there wouldn't be any cheat or "hint" help.

That's my 2 coppers

Re: Question:

I've actually asked this question (I still play EQ) and you're right!

Another thing I've mentioned to offending players, since the morality of the servers seems to be slipping drastically is, "...it is against the rules of the game..." to which I am continually retorted with, "Who reads that stuff? You nuts?"

I'm all for the police state!

Re: Question:

Lore is one of the most important aspects for *any* game. It creates the world we play within, it gives it a life of it's own and gives us players a sense of 'belonging' in that world. Imagine a world with no history and no legends. It would be a very unbelievable place. Give us lore and lots of it!

Re: Question:

There has been a lot of hot air over the last few years about wanting a mature challenging game. To my thinking, puzzels are the way to go and the games Lore is the key to this

Knowledge of Telons Lore should give you a real advantage in the game. There should (and I think will) be libraries where you can study lore.

Some quests should relate to legendary characters , places or monsters who are discovered through old scrolls and even the learning of ancient languages.

Re: Question:

One of my all time favorite console games used puzzles as part of its gameplay. If I recall correctly, (its been years) Chrono Trigger made you solve several different puzzles to get to secret areas throughout its story line. They could be simple like moving blocks into a specific order or more complex but they definitely added a fun dimension to the game.

I'd love to come upon a rare text with a group and be the only member capable of reading the text and thus understanding how to trigger an AES.
