I'd love to come upon a rare text with a group and be the only member capable of reading the text and thus understanding how to trigger an AES.
I wouldn't really use "Chrono Trigger" as an example. While there are a couple of cases where remembering stuff was important it really isn't that important compared to other CRPGs. In fact most of it wasn't really related to the lore of the game so much as remembering the geography of the game and that is a pretty standard RPG element anyway. Of course that doesn't mean there isn't any cases where this is scene as there are a couple and it does actually seem like they intended to put such things in but never got it in before the game's deadline, kind of like Magus' combo list.

Far as CRPGs go I actually can't any that are real good about needing to know the lore of the game for a big advantage. On the other hand I can think of a few action RPGs where it is very important. Probabally the best ones would be "Crystalis" or some of the "Legend of Zelda" games.

That said I think the lore for the game is very important. It give purpose behind your travels and slayings. You aren't just killing a big nasty dragon; you are killing the great destroyer who has finally awoken from his 1000 year sleep.
