Far as CRPGs go I actually can't any that are real good about needing to know the lore of the game for a big advantage. On the other hand I can think of a few action RPGs where it is very important. Probabally the best ones would be "Crystalis" or some of the "Legend of Zelda" games. That said I think the lore for the game is very important. It give purpose behind your travels and slayings. You aren't just killing a big nasty dragon; you are killing the great destroyer who has finally awoken from his 1000 year sleep.
