New Music: Diaspora

Diaspora -

1. A dispersion of a people from their original homeland.
2. The community formed by such a people

While the people of Telon will begin as an individualized and nationalistic group of races, one can imagine that the same will not remain constant over the years. 2-3 years in, and we will be sure to see a good deal of diaspora happen with both the races and their cultural trades and crafts.

The concept is very much a part of our daily lives in the real world. The countries we live in are often a great deal in thanks to this concept. Not one of our cultures in this global economy hasn't been affected by another, and we slowly become more and more integrated into one another whether we notice it or not.

While this piece in general isn't taking influence from the exact cultures and races in Vanguard, the influence and inspiration is still there, spawned by my ruminations on how exactly Vanguard will become after many years of exploration and discovery by Telon's global community.

Back when I composed solely with General MIDI and my Yamaha PSR-530, I wrote a lot of very "culturally diverse" tunes, taking instruments that sounded neat regardless of where they came from or how they fit together. Other composers have done this for stylistic identity in a project (Yasunori Mitsuda & Firefly's Greg Edmonson come to mind.), but I really enjoyed just combining whatever I could get my hands on.

Then, of course, came two advents: College and the insistance to write for real players, and my first orchestral sample library, bringing down the quality sounds to just symphonic instruments. While I love writing for both things, the diverse sounds of other instruments from the world kept tugging at my inspiration.

My recent expansion of new and interesting sample libraries led me to create this piece called Diaspora. It takes stylistic influence and instruments from several strong world styles: bluegrass, celtic, indian, african, flamanco, japanese, etc. and brings them together in a melting pot of sound.

Wish I had your Talent, sounds like a piece that my inquisitor would be listening to sitting by a fireplace in a pub drinking a frosty pint of beer after a victorous battle.
