Ok, so.....
Let's revisit this policy set forth by Sigil, ok? This is what was posted August of 2006 regarding that:

I have seen, since starting VG, the following and have /petition all of them from various servers including beta:
Baung Smoker
Bongsmoker
Lycket Smuthe
Yomahma Sphat
Hayrlis Beivar
Ikehl Jooh
Chyht Sleenghar
Phock Meah
and on and on it goes. Now, anyone who can say that any of the above are acceptable needs to rethink their morales IMO. Im not saying that some aren't funny, but my that is not the environment I want my kids playing in.

I have seen:
Bandages Feelgood
Theamerican Idolguy
Skooba Steve
Billie Gates
Bobs Sheild
Shakenbake
Imace Yerface
Cigarette Spinebender
Cya Later
Oreocookie Whitefilling
Fahbreeze
Weebay ( We Ebay ) ?
Iberobbin Hood
Bloodee Mary
Lightheal Phoenixwind
I couldn't get Greenleaf as a Surname for one of my toons but someone got Spinebender, Phoenixwind and Whitefilling?
I don't mean to write a book here but I could go on forever it seams.
If there was actually a Master GM approveing Names upon creation like Sigil has claimed there was going to be. http://www.silkyvenom.com/forums/showthread.php?t=859
Then their is no way some of that stuff would have gotten through.
"The American Idol Guy" ?????????? Come on Sigil?

Re: InGame Naming Policy
Ya know what? Put server names with those, and I'll bet it would help certain lurkers!!
Also, I'm sure that all the GMs are trying hard to wade thru the names, but when you open a floodgate and the masses pour thru, it's hard to sort them out, at the beginning. Hang in there, and thanks!!
Whitefilling?

Re: InGame Naming Policy
I don't agree with their naming policy. How can they use these criteria to tell you what's acceptable? What is recognizable media to one person may be completely foreign to another.
As a player, who am I tell to another that "your name is ruining my gaming experience"? Strict rules on a roleplaying server, however, makes total sense. If you want to be "immersed" in the game then play a roleplaying server; that is what they're for, immersion.
Also, in my personal experience, GMs have a whole boatload of other problems to worry about other than the naming policy. Missing tombstones? Falling into an endless loop of falling through the world, teleporting out, and falling back through (the /stuck yes command just precipitates the loop)? There are far more important things to worry about than "immersion breaking names".
The GMs should also be MUCH better about answering inquiries to bans and/or suspensions. My friend had an "inapproriate name" (which is still up for debate) and was suspended for three days. Now, on day SIX, customer service has only sent him ONE e-mail, three days after he sent it. They said "your account is under investigation, we'll notify you later". Helpful, yet not.
There are a world of other problems GMs should be dealing with other than a witch hunt for inapproriate names

Because its their game. THEY make the rules. Don't have to agree, just have to abide by it. I'm in full support of it.

pretty much if its from a published book/movie, you cant use it, however if no ones ever heard of it you arnt gonna get reported so its not a big deal.

i think the guideline for this is, if it ruins someones gaming experience and a GM agrees thats its bad than its gonna get changed, they want to limit names that offend/ruin ppl's gaming experience, but of course only within certain limits, if someone complains about Iendan because its hard to pronounce they arnt gonna do anything, but if someone complains about IPwn Nubslol than its prolly gonna get changed because it obviously is not a proper name. In general the obvious ones are gonna get dealt with first and less obvious ones are prolly gonna get a chance to explain themselves, or atleast thats how it should be.

and likely those other things will take priority over immersion breaking names

they are understaffed, these things suck and should definitly not happen, but they dont have enough ppl and cant avoid it, and they are working on improving on this, they've hired more GM's and are working on getting to petitions and such faster

and they are, to the best of their abilities they are, and hopefully it will get better.

Hmm, I'd have to say a chieftain of the Dúnedain! Maybe a king of Arnor or Arthedain...naw, I'm going with a chieftain *heads off to check encyclopedia of Arda*
My only problem with the policy is that (as some has already mentioned) you can't use apostrophes, accent marks and other symbols like those. Personally I love using these for pnp-rpgs, for me they add a flavor and helps with the pronounciation.

Re: InGame Naming Policy
Has anyone at all had any of their names deemed against the name policy and subsequently been forced to change your name?
If Yes..... please explain what happened.
What was Sigils procedure in enforcing their name policy?
What was your name? What did they make you change it to?
Just wondering how exactly they were handling this.
