Ok, so.....
Let's revisit this policy set forth by Sigil, ok? This is what was posted August of 2006 regarding that:

Re: InGame Naming Policy
I agree it would be nice to be able to use apostrophy's in names. My original Dark Elven name was T'Enithar which I actually was able to use in Everquest because a GM gave it to me back when they still did the surname ceremonies at L20. Later on they made it illegal to make new names like that so it really felt special to fly that surname.

Re: InGame Naming Policy
I haf lived long enuf t' understand, believe and accept that rules are necessary. I maynae always like a rule, but I will deal with it. 'Tis m' choice t' do so with a positive approach and cooperative attitude.
I agreed t' follow this name policy because most of it is common sense/courtesy and I felt their reasons are reasonable and I ken be reasoned with; most times .
I pulled out wut matter'd t' me most in the quoted subject matter;

The intent of our naming policy is to promote the feeling of being immersed in Telon. These policies apply to all player names, regardless of creation date....

• Getting married or divorced.

As many o' the readers in the previous replies (and other forum topics), I haf been searchin' fer information aboot Vanguard/Telon so that I kewd "feel immersed" in this new and excitin' world. From the information Vanguard provided, I chose t' live as a wood elf ranger (something new fer me).
That meant I wewd begin life in Kojan. With the information that Ca’ial Brael wewd be the startin' city fer a wood elf, I originally chose t' spell m' name as Da'nti. However, in Beta 5, I learned that wasnae possible. Although it was a disappointment, I quickly adjusted m' thinkin' and composed a different spellin' o' m' name.
That's m' thoughts on this matter and I'm stickin' t' em!

Re: InGame Naming Policy
It will be nice to play a game with this type policy. Im tired of the leet, lewd and other types of immature and crappy names people come up with.
Immersion into the lore will be easier when you dont run into people named Ryan Seacrest, or Madonna Suqs.

Hello all i think the naming deal is ok it is just like all the other games but i hope it remains a little tighter as the game stays on like it is set up.

Re: InGame Naming Policy
I concur with a naming policy...I don't agree that one will be enforced; haven't seen it happen yet through a half dozen or more mainstream mmorpgs (that had paid GMs on staff).
When the game launches, I will have decided on my primary class, drafted a brief biography, and have about 3-4 names chosen to run through in case they are taken when I try them.
That being said, I have been in beta, I have had the opportunity to see what kind of names are "normal" in what areas, so I have a reasonable chance to select something immerseful (is that a word?) What about the brand new players who have no idea what they are getting into? Sure, elves, dwarves, humans have a reasonable chance. But what about the animal races? Orcs, Goblins, Half-Giants? BTW, I would think Sparqs or whatever it was would fly as a Half-Giant.
Finally, in a way I can appreciate names like spongebob, inurface, irock, etc...BECAUSE they tell me exactly who to avoid like the plague!

Well, I can tell ya now that the GMs do take names seriously, and they intend to continue the trend! Beta isn't the best time to see that, maybe, but just wait!
New guys? Well, they sign the EULA, too. If they don't want to read it, it's not Sigil's fault! They're still expected to follow it. Same with the language! Filters are put in place to assist (name/languge), not to take the place of obeying rules and good judgment.
The biggest disappointment to me was SoE relaxing the naming policies in EQ. If they do that here....I don't know. I'll be very, very disappointed! That's not something ya just decide to "dumb down" on, if you will, and keep the feel of the world! Make your rules, and stick to them. If you agree to the rules by signing something, don't whine ingame about how stupid it is, or unfair, or any of that.
Anywho...keep the comments coming! People are watching!

When I referred to the new guys (never been in Vanguard before), I meant I could see their frustration. Example: You enter game for first time and create a Kalasasha. Because you haven't been in beta, you have no idea what type of name you should use. Sooooo, you go through a dozen or so that all get rejected and thus the frustration sets in, you get fed up, and just start entering random nonsense until something...ANYTHING...lets you in the game. Seems such a simple fix to have a name suggester based on race that gets players into the game faster. If I go through my several names and they don't work, I resort to the name generator (for games that have them), then adjust one of the names provided by adding or taking away letters...works every time and always gives me a RP appropriate name.
Now what we have to avoid is something like EQ used where almost all Iksar had a variation on the same name...at least it seemed that way to me!

Re: InGame Naming Policy
ahhhh...I get ya!
I agree, actually. The name generator actually has helped me come up with appropriate names. My very first toon ever got her name that way. I just kept scrolling thru the generator until something struck a chord, then I started playing with the spelling of it to make it into a decent name. She's been with me for 7 years, almost, and I love her to pieces!
Amazing how characters take on a life of their own and you actually get to know them! That's what a good game will do for you!
