Everquesting Progressivly

The progressive servers, Combine and Sleeper, have been up for exactly one week. The world of Norrath has come alive in a way that surprised even SOE, I'm sure! Who would have thought that 500 people would be running thru GFay in search of illusive mobs needed to begin the progressive march?

But, that's exactly what happened!

When SoE announced that they were going to open the "classic" server, people started buzzing in guildchats and on boards. Phones started ringing to old friends who had long since quit. "Old" Norrath was coming back!!

I popped online only seconds after the server came up. Between the buzz and the reality, SoE found such an overwhelming response that they readied a second server, Sleeper, to take the overflow. Well, I'm not sure "overflow" is quite the way to put it! If there were 500 elves running thru GFay, and all newbie zones were reportedly at capacity, and if Sleeper was reporting 850 elves...this has really got to make you stop and think!

Granted, a week into this and the numbers have dropped off a a bit, but not that much. Consider that there are, on an average, 230 people in GFay now, and we have people who are over level 30 now (sad, isn't it!?) who are trying hard to "beat the game" once again. Point being, if you have more people spread out to higher zones, you still have a LOT of people on that server! And, we are lucky enough...*choke*...to have Fires of Heaven on Combine, too. Added to that about 2 other guilds with the same mentality, and the race is on.

What is it that people love about this revival?

Two things seem to be the biggest draw: Old friends returning and everyone on a level playing field. Druids, once again, making their mark and being needed. Wizzies holding their own in combat, even at young ages, and feeling good about it! Enchanters doing crowd control and loving their job, and people loving them for it. Shadow Knight trolls being the intimidators and bards running all over (and there are a BUNCH of them!) with drums, aggroing guards with their first AoE songs (and wondering, "WHY DID I DIE???" newbs!) and bringing back nostalgia to a world that had lost that lovin' feeling!

And, you know what? I'm hearing seasoned EQ vets running thru the zones SCREAMING in horror as they get aggro from a still-green mob, who happens to be followed by a bright red Hill_Giant02 that is being joined by Hill_Giant03, and the screams aren't fake! They are seriously scared to death. It's like Shayalyn from TTH said, "...the same rush of trepidation and excitment." Something that has been lacking in MMO's for a LONG time!

Of course, you still have the griefers and just plain idiots, like a certain monk last night in Misty, who runs thru a zone, gathering as many mobs as possible and then bolt for the guards at the gate. When I sent "her" (fat chance) a tell asking her what the hey she was doing, she just said she was taking the mobs to the guards to kill. When I asked her why she would do that, she asked me if I wanted her to die. *sigh* Now, ya have to realize this is an under-20 zone, and at level 10 (me), the mobs she was collecting where blue to me (or btm, as we lovingly say). So, tell me WHY she was worried about dying. So, in my infinate wisdom, I reminded her that she could be reported for zone disruption (there had been multiple people complaining) and there was no need for her to do that. Her response was ohhh, so typical of today's "modern" gamer mentality: "Are you telling me I can't play for the enjoyment I want out of this game???"

Ok, so let's go back to why we're having fun...FUN, do you HEAR ME???

Again, I refer to Shayalyn's article when she said, "...I invested myself in the lore...I undertook an epic quest to earn (key word here!) a powerful weapon...EQ allowed me to be as geeky as I wanted to be..." and that feeling has returned! People are RPing in /ooc and in /say. They are loving the mix of mobs in a zone...nothing grey and a lot of KoS surprises! They are actually excited to find cloth armor on mobs, or bronze, or do tradeskills and make things for each other or to earn money! In short, they are wishing FoH and the other "ubers" would go someplace else to unlock the next expansion so we can have the time to relive the innocence!

If SoE was really smart, they would offer those uber-ites a place to go beat each other up. Some server of their very own that they can race to their heart's content and let the majority of the other (that never seemed to get listened to before) really enjoy what SoE has done. As some say in /shout, "This is the first RIGHT thing SoE has done in years!!"

Hasten the day, Brad McQuaid, when many of these people who have loved Norrath so much can learn about Telon and all it has to offer! Take notes as to why they have flocked back to their roots....YOUR roots and ideas...with abandon. I feel Shay might be correct when, in her wishes and dreams, she has loved Everquest and now seeks Vanguard:Saga of Heroes. I share her thoughts!

Salute!

Re: Everquesting Progressivly

I actually haven't played on progression and honestly don't think I am going to. Sure it's a cool idea and all but I already quit the game and honestly picking up the game again at this point would only be rehashing the things I did before. I've played that game before and now I am done with it and have moved on. Could I really do it all again? Sure I can, but to what purpose? It all really just seems like too much of a hassle to get invovled with again.

Re: Everquesting Progressivly

I've been playing again on the progression server, Combine, and having a ball.

I once again resurrected Niborea, my paladin, but this time she came back a human instead of the high elf I played for over 6 years. I don't get alot of time to play and have only reached level 8 but I do know it's gone much faster than I remember it taking the first time around. I'm not thrilled with the revamp of Freeport however, I get lost ALOT!

I'm also taking a good look into the tradeskills this time around, I was very proud when I successfully created my own leather armor

Re: Everquesting Progressivly

Well, I quit EQ in May but it's still a taint on my memory. I read this forum about the progression server >LINK< and discovered that in under 1 week there were already several toons at the max level (50).

Combine that with the onslaught of bad conduct trains / KS / and the usual PL and Gold Farming crowd, I fail to see the enjoyment that this was supposed to bring. I know, I know.. I'm being pessimistic

At any rate, if you read alla's forums on it there is alot of entertaining rants about bad experiences, as well as a few about nostalgiac love. My 2cp on the whole deal is EQ went too far with DoDH, and even though the combine is a restriceted progression server, it doesn't fix the community. That is where my problem dwells. Too many multiboxers that only care about end-game or top level feeding the infamous IGE plat farming market. >LINK<. and it seems like none of them can spell. The perfect solution for me would be a private network / LAN only access server, at which point I would say ~HAZZAH~ as I enjoyed a great nostalgiac challenge amongst competant gamers.

I ain't arrogant nor ignorant, I just had too much love for EQ and let people ruin my day too often. Sorry for the negativity.

Re: Everquesting Progressivly

Well I got the excitement bug when I heard about this server. I called my old gaming friends that I made while playing EQ and they where on Sleeper. So I reload EQ and reopen my account. I have not played in over one year, and I still remember my User Name and Password. I came back as a monk this time to try the melee side of the house. It was quite exilarating to hear the music and log in. I got my newbi tunic and off to the hunting grounds I went. DING 2!. Weee man this is fun. Ok, now to get back to my monk guildmaster and train up. I got lost. Can somebody help me find the monk guild. Use Find. -Jaw Drops- I though this was old school server. I look and sure enough it's there. Then I think too myself, self, hit M. Pop Map comes up. /faint. So much for old school. The game was never the problem. The game was, and still is, very nice. It's the Mechanics that is the problem. I hit level 3 and did not have to go train safefall. It just poped up. Well I'm playing for abit more because I'm hunting with my friends but I just don't see it lasting. Before I logged off last night, Naggy had died. I mean it's been 2 weeks right? o'well. I do think this experience has helped me though. When I log into Vanguard:SoH I should expect some new Mechanics. This is not Original EQ, nor should it be Original EQ. This has helped me prepare for the future of gaming.

Re: Everquesting Progressivly

Wow I hadnt heard how fast things were progressing on the progressive server. I do remember how long it took us Cazic-Thule the first time through to get to L50 and it definitely wasnt 2 weeks. I guess there are two sides to look at though. When we all started in EQ, it was the first time many of us had ever played an MMO so alot of skills were being learned from scratch. These days we have quite a foundation to build off of so we would level faster but I have to wonder if the XP curve from the original game made it onto the progressive server as well.

Re: Everquesting Progressivly

I did not think it would be that quick also. The reason I belive it is this fast, is Guilds. I did not start playing EQ when it first came out. I start about 4 months before Kurnak came out. From what I was told, by freinds that started playing with in the first month, EQ had Zero Guilds. You could not create a guild. About 3 months after it came out then you could. Very few pepole where orginazed enough to start up a large guild.

Now this time around, pepole had large guilds set up before the server's where turned on. They had a plan in place and where ready to roll with it.

So my question too you great thinkers out there is this. Will Vanguard be ready for the march of large guilds the day the servers open up? How will these guilds effect the game play in genral.

Re: Everquesting Progressivly

I think it will be ready. Guilds have become a way of life in these games and are even starting to have entire mechanics built with them in mind. Just one example of that is player cities. So with that in mind, I think Sigil understands that guilds will be a big part of the game and are designing it with them in mind.

Re: Everquesting Progressivly

I recently built a new computer and am having a hard time playing at all. I recently installed EQ on my computer and when i run, it looks like i'm gliding across teh zone instead of running. other people also look this way to me. I was told that it may be because of a duel processor glitch, I'm not sure. i bought an asus mother board and only bought a single processor when i did. the amd 4400. Maybe I'm mistaken with what i'm using but i dont beleive i have duel processors. Anywho, I would reall love to get on this new server and test it out for a bit. I'm bored with EQ2 and I hate WoW and I would like to go back to the old school. Any help would be nice. By the way i have pci express with 2 cards. For the record it is only EQ that i have this problem with, not any of the other games I play.

Re: Everquesting Progressivly

Hello there phatkat. Welcome.

Do you know if your AMD 4400 is an X2? The X2 denotes a dual core processor which essentially gives you two processors in the space of one. So it actually is possible you have a glitch related to having two processors.
