Changing Times in Gaming Information

So...it happened!

Yesterday, one of the all-time favorite info sites for (originally) Everquest shook hands with "the big boys" and admitted to getting stuck. I'm sure most people have seen the threads about it by now. If not, you can check here to read what they posted, as well as what people have been saying.

Now, I'm not going to go into great length here, but I find it very interesting and a bit disheartening. A lot of people wondered if Allakhazam would join the Vanguard movement. I think that we now know the answer to that.

It's really hard when you struggle to provide the readers/players with what they want. It's a lot of work to keep up with the information. Harder yet when you get so large that it takes money (and quite a bit of it) to keep the doors open and the information flowing smoothly! (Hello, Lucy! ) For instance, I remember Alla having to ask for donations, and when that wasn't enough, started selling premium accounts/memberships. That wasn't bad at all, really, and my hubby had one that I found invaluable! And then, IGE trying to move in a bit...courting them, if you will, but they refused! We all said, "Thank you!"

The ownership issues here are convoluted. This is how deals like this get done. The size of this is pretty amazing. This is just the announcement for our own users, not the actual corporate announcement, which will likely come much later. We are now owned by a company that owns a bunch of stuff, including IGE. They bought both of us (and several other sites as well) and then split us into separate divisions so that there is no interaction between them. You know my stand on gold selling. Before agreeing to anything like this, I wanted to make sure that there would be no interaction between those divisions and that I would have complete control over the new network, including the sites that used to be part of ogaming. So this means that the Ogaming sites and Thottbot have been split off of IGE and into our network and no longer have any connection with them..
hmmm....

What would happen if, say, Ogaming approaching this site's owner and saying that they like it, but know we need help to build it and maintain it, and they have the resources. They could even "buy" our affiliate status and we could be the front men and work with the tools already inplace with Alla (for instance) to be a huge VSoH information site! Who would know?

VanguardSpheres is commited to being good, reliable and ethically sound. That's why I'm here. I don't care about flash and having money behind us to draw people in. I do care about our community and what we represent! We're proud of our Affiliate status and will never sell out or intentionally "leak" information to get readers. We have a lot more that will be brought out before too terribly long, but timing is everything. The time is just not right yet.

So, my friends...we would love to hear your thoughts, once you've had opportunity to study the situation. I'll admit, I haven't read every word yet, but I'm watching! I don't think you have to consume every participle to know what just happened.

Re: Changing Times in Gaming Information

To me it just seems like the march of the big corporation into our world looking for a new trough to stick their corporate snouts in. I admire and support those sites like this one who value independence and integrity above making a quick buck.

The problem lies in greed, the need for instant gratification and the pace of modern life. There are those in the UK that have put a price on their time. period. Nothing to do with work just that every second of every day has a price attached to it, spending time working your way into a game is simply not cost effective. They calculate the price of the hundred or so hours required to reach a certain level in a game and can rationalize spending cash to reduce the time buying gold or an account and therebye save money!!!! insane logic, yes, but I am not making this up.

All this is a million miles from the attitude of the original players of D&D or Everquest but then noone expected to millions to play the games or that it would become a billion dollar industry. It is the far east that is setting the trend where players in MMOG's can become public heros and guilds exist outside as well as inside the game.
