Re: So I became an Envoy without playing...?
Because generally if you make much of any progress in the game (particularly in diplomacy/harvesting) you'll have a new end-title to use, rather than the hometown one (like Novice Reaper, Emissary of the Thestran People). So folks with the hometown one I guess are being labeled "newbies" because they're still using them. I hope that makes sense.

Re: So I became an Envoy without playing...?
It does. I suspect I was being too subtle, but basically what I meant to say is, calling someone a newbie based on anything you can see about them or think you can tell about them is both short-sighted and intolerant (EDIT -- I'm not calling anyone here that; I'm just pointing out that it can lead to an attitude I've seen many times elsewhere). I've been playing online game for nigh-on ten years now, but I'm not motivated by titles, I'm not particularly motivated by gear, and even if I reach level umpty-ump I don't try to rub anyone's face in it. I'm an altoholic and have dozens of lowbie chars all over the MMO multiverse - does that make them newbs? Does that make me a newb? Appearances can be deceptive. I don't think I qualify as a newbie, except insofar as I try not to get jaded and *never* assume I know it all, though many of my chars sure *look* like newbs.
Clearly I need to get some extra skill points in Subtlety and Making A Point. I'll have to take em out of Rambling and What-On-Earth-Is-She-On-About? ![]()

Re: So I became an Envoy without playing...?
i used "the dedicated" in eq2 (2yr member of eq2 i believe) and the founders title in vanguard because i like the, not exactly prestige but respect, given from having these titles, i don't see it as saying your better, but more of a way of asserting your competence to people you meet, but i prolly like that because of have somewhat low opinion of my own skills in most games and i suppose it makes me feel better about my competence, but all this is just me, i can definitely see the pretentious-ness that could be seen in those titles.

Re: So I became an Envoy without playing...?
Heh, that was my point Ien
*I* don't feel the need to use them because it feels pretentious to me when I do. That doesn't mean I think everyone else who does is pretentious; it just doesn't feel right for me. I chased my share of them in EQ2, even though I never actually used them.I *did* use them in AC and rather liked them there (but there were no names-above-heads in that game - you only saw em if you examined someone). It's possible my biggest gripe isn't with titles themselves (I really don't think I object to them) but with having two-thirds of my screen taken up by SOMEONE'S REALLY BIG NAME!!! That goes with me not liking that kind of stuff (names) on my screen anyway though -- and yeah, I get bitten by snakes I didn't see ALL the time as I run around Telon. ![]() I think I've probably officially hijacked another thread. Can I have a title? I am very sorry about that.
