It's another type of balance isnt it. make classes too independent and group play suffers. Make them too dependent and your group class mix gets to restrictive.
The aim is to encourage tactics rather than sheer brute force to overcome the mobs and keep the vulnerable members of your group alive but have sufficent independence to do damage on your own.
That moment when your mage is the only member of the group left alive and the boss has 10 hp left, mana is gone, so all you got to kill him with is your staff!!
