Im not 100% positive but I think the 5% crit chance on shortsword gets cut in half in secondary hand doesn't it? to 2.5%?
Either way I am in the same boat. I live by 2 shortswords. I find the crit ratio is far much better. Only drawback is you put all your eggs in one basket relying on crits. When you don't crit things get hairy heh.
