Semi-Spoiler alert.
The stones (Symbols) can drop before you get the quest. Most of my friends and I just farmed our symbols from the forest before going in to get, and immediately turn in the quest.
The Axe requires Tree, Wave, Star, and Shadow.
The Sword requires Pearl, Moon, Sun, and Shadow.
Shadow is "the rarest," not because it drops the least, but because it's used in 4/5 of the weapons and everyone wants it. Star is the 2nd worst.
The first upgrade quest comes from a shade at the base of the stairs to the tomb. Don't take the quests he has until you have the blue version of your weapon. You can't complete them early if you do, and they've bugged a couple of my friends by consuming components out of order. The proper order is:
Symbol quest from the Runestones in the tomb.
Kill (50 Mobs) Quest from the Shade.
Riddle quest from the Shade.
Named NPC kill quest from the Shade.
Generals from the Shade.
Quest to go to Thestra (from the Shade).
I'm reluctant to post any more spoiler info, but if you have a question PM me and I'm happy to answer. A lot of the quests were rather vague and difficult to figure out, not to mention buggy. I don't know a single person who was able to finish the quest without doing the generals twice for a second Rune.
