The rate at which darkness again "fills in" an area where light once filled it is actually just the speed of light as it receeds and in it's absence leaves darkness again. So, the darkness never really left, it was always there, but light took it over. Just like with a fully painted canvas, you can no longer see the blank canvas underneath it, unless you remove the paint.
