In my honest opinion, I think WoW did wonders for their way of handing out loot, such as class specific armor sets, and even some class specific weapons that were attainable through quests. Although there were many things about this way of distribution that suck, overall it was effective.

I am a strong believe of having a Warrior-esque figure being able to wield any sort of weapon, whereas a caster / healer type should have a much smaller selection. I mean, if all this were realistic, a priest would not have the physical strength to use 'Great Mace of Doom Death and Destruction.'

This brings up another way of restricting certain classes of taking other classes gear, is have a stat restriction, where if your strenth was not high enough, you could not wield the almighty sword of slaughter, but if you really wanted to and had the means, you could get your strength to the required level, but it would be much more difficult compared to an actual fighter class.
