I usually don't have a problem with restrictions to a degree. My problem is when you have a system setup like this...
1. Mages-cloth
2. Healers-cloth,leather, some chain, some plate
3. Dps-cloth, leather, chain
4. Tanks-cloth, leather, chain, plate
In that system, mages can get screwed. Say a robe drops with great PoT (power over time), almost always some other class will want it. The healer, dps, and tank can all wear it, even though it doesn't help their AC in the least. I have seen tanks wear robes when they weren't the main tank simply to have more PoT.
Now if a leather/chain/plate peice drops with PoT, can the mage take it and use it? No. That trickle down system just creates hassles (even in normal group situations when people get a tad roll happy, we've all seen them, dkp can't help you there).
So in my mind it should be a system that tries to provide a fair distribution while reducing cross class competition for certain items. Let's face it, a tank should not be wearing cloth armor, even if he COULD wear it. You would think that crappy AC would be incentive enough to keep one from wearing cloth or leather, but it's not.
