From what i've seen of the screenshots the low level armour seems slim and fits the person form and expands as you level up.
Also i've read that the armour is designed to be more functional than just pure fantasy and anything that is over the top has a good reason for it :?
I love how some of the armour in screenshots have this overly padded look in parts as if that part of the armour will be used to deflect weapon strikes.
Also the more colourful armour seems to be lending its styles from the old colour schemes that were displayed in medival times by knights matching their coat of arms.
