I believe sensing what your enemy is about to smack you with is skill (i.e. the Perception skill) based. If your perception skill is good enough compared to the mob you have a higher chance of detecting what it's gonna do, and from the OP quote it sounds like there's a window or something that shows you the "mobs queue".

I love the sound of this; instead of having your damage taking influenced primarily by rolls you can directly mitigate damage to some degree.

I wonder if the difference between weapons won't just be attack speeds or defensive counter bonuses. Perhaps the types of openers, chains, and finishers you do are dependent on the weapon you use as well? It would make sense that the type of attacks you can do with an ax would differ from those you can do with a sword.
