I have always looked at classes as how they would fit in an Army. For example I see Rogues being the spies, Rangers being scouts, Wizards artilery, Paladins/DreadLords are the calvery, and warriors are the foot soldiers.
Warriors are your unset fighters, they are not bound to any one style of fighting, where rogues you can almost always count on using dex and agi to win a fight, or a ranger will almost always use his bow first, and a paladin will be very skilled with blade but prefer more honorable fighting techniques. Warriors however have no set path to adhere to, when you face a warrior he could overwhelm you with strength, out manuver you with his speed, will readily use a 2h spear or a pair of long daggers or anything else for that matter. You just never know what you are going to get yourself into with a fighter.
And as for the leader of these armies, well class doesn't matter, I see the leaders being the highest lvl, the best of the gathered classes.
