Miyamoto Musashi wrote of Timing in his Book of Five Rings. For him the warrior observes his enemy's rhythm in order to properly plan and execute his move. Moving in slowly and speeding up to throw off an opponents timing is critical to winning an engagement.
By properly estimating an enemy's movements, one can conserve energy and resources when executing the proper attack.
A perfect combination when observing the tenets set forth by Sun Tzu and how they interweave with Vanguard.
By being a proactive fighter, as opposed to one on "auto-pilot" or simply reacting to the situation, the Vanguard fighter will instead will be able to counter and foil attacks through proper understanding of the enemy's tactics and observance of his movements. The fighter will then time his movements and chains to defeat his opponent while conserving energy for near future engagements.
