Go back to loading screen and stop there

On a live server (for this happening) the buttons stop doing stuff (just like if a chunk goes down) and the game goes back to a loading screen. You can still hear some ambiant effects in the back ground. Escape does nothing. checking the log on another computer it says lost world server, but never gets back to character selction. Only way out is to Ctrl-Alt-Del
