That may not be such a bad thing, Od - it might have been too old to run stuff as needed anyway.
Sound has always been a weird thing in games (at least for me), and as someone else mentioned above, getting dedicated hardware to run sound can take a great deal of load off the other stuff. I'm not sure how it works either, but I've seen it in practice in a number of games.
I'm following this thread myself - hubby and I have onboard sound and it seems like a minor investment might pay off handsomely in performance and/or stability, both of which I wouldn't mind improving.
