2H Weapon vs. 1H Weapon, can someone explain DPS stats?

I have been baffle dby this for some time and was wondering if anyone could explain it to me. Ok, here goes. In you charactor screen if you mouse over the "Attack" stat it will pop up a tooltip that say what your auto attack Damage Per Second is. Well my big question is this how is a two handed weapon's DPS (Damage Per Second) figured. My bafflement happend on my wife's charator. SHe has a level 20 warrior. And has a 27.5 DPS 1H Axe and a 17.5 DPS 2H Maul. Now her 1H Slashing, Axe, 2H Blunt and Hammer skills are all at 105 when I checked this. (I know low for her level but she had never used either type before. Now the real puzzler cam when checking the DPS under the Attack tooltip. It said that the 1H Axe had an overall attack of 85 DPS and the 2H Maul had 115 DPS. Now finally getting to the question, how is the DPS for 2H weapons figured, because if it is just a multiplication of the base DPS stated in the weapons tooltip there is no way it should have been higher than the 1H axe. Since the axe claims a DPS of 10 DPS more from the weapons tooltip. Or does the 2H weapon DPS value get added to each hand, so its really like a 35 DPS weapon when carried. One last thing that I thought it might be is that the 2H maul says it gets a double weapon bonus when a crit is hit. Is it possible that the tooltip is lying and accounting for the double damage although no crit has been hit when checking it.

I know this is a bit lengthy but it has been driving me crazy. Thanks in advance for the help.
