I can't imagine how this would be a ram thing. You can run memtest or try taking one stick out (assuming you have more than one) to see if you get more or fewer errors, then swapping them, if you do want to check this.

I actually would second this unless you've figured it out. When I had the bad stick of ram, I couldn't start VG, and my Antivirus program wouldn't work either (Bitdefender 10).
