Beginners Guide to Crafting
Crafting works like this:
1. Find the Crafting Trainer (one in each major town, easy to find as it will say Crafting Trainer above his head and he most likely will stand around a ton of crafting machines, buildings, and other crafting, refining, finishing trainers and various crafting tables).
2. Crafting Quests: Take his several quests until you've completed all of them and he will tell you to go find a person who gives you work orders. This only takes 30 minutes or so, in the mean time you'll get some free crafting gear and tools.
Open your inventory window, you'll notice theres a tab for adventure, crafting, harvesting, and diplomacy. Open the Crafting one. Put your new found gear on.
Gear will help you with simple stat and skill bonus. I don't know which are more benificial I tend to put on whatever boosts more stats highest. But I can say you a full suit by lvl 15+ is recommended if you wish to be able to finish anything difficult with high Grade. So do the quests for them, then as you start doing more difficult stuff around lvl 11-12.
3. Tool Belts, you'll notice 3 slots for tool belts. A tip is to buy 2 cause you will be able to push the dust button in case you switch allready to Stage 3.
Put the 3 tools you notice you use all the time in your work orders in the first tool belt that you'll get from your quest. Buy a second tool belt, and as you are told "you can't do this work order because you lack this or that tool", go buy it and put it in tool belt 2.
You may find you need to mix them up as you get new skills but, the idea is to try not to switch tools too often as it cost some points during crafting. Do all the switching you can before you start crafting, and if you have to switch don't worry its not to expensive, but again try and figure out the "best tool placement" from noticing what your asked for each time you craft, it can be the different between grade A or B
So how to level: Work Orders are given by refining Instructors or Finishing Instructors. Both have very similar work orders but each are different. They do the same stuff but when you notice you've exhausted all the difficulty level one's your happy doing (Some like to do high Medium ones or Low Difficult ones), then just goto the other work order giver and get theirs.
Note: You have to return work orders to the person who gave them too you. If you fail one just go back to the person who gave it to you and abandon it. Doesn't hurt anything just costs you the fuel you used on it trying to make it happen. So if you notice early on your failing just quit and goto the next one.
You can have up to 3 work orders at once. I always get 3 do all 3 then return to turn them in at the same time.
Notice all your experience is granted when you turn the work order in, unless you get Quality Grade C or better. The higher you get above it the more experience you get during the crafting process and after you turn it in as well.
As you level there will be an instructor near you that you must go see for new recipes. These have nothing to do with work orders but they will open new opportunities to you as you start crafting items for the economy or friends.
Lastly 2 points:
- Certain work orders are to be done on certain machines, Refining WO on the refining once and finishing WO on finishing machines.
- Work orders come free, theres no costs or items needed for them, EXCEPT fuel. Also as you craft you'll come up against complications, and usually in the beginning 2 items are available to stamp out a complication with ease, these all can be purchased by a vendor called the utility vendor, also standing in each crafting area.
4a. Negative Complications: These pesky critters pop up as icons to the right of your crafting interface, when one pops up click the icon, then click the icon below to stamp it out. However as you learn which one does which sometimes its best to leave it alone let it run through the 3-5 turns it takes for it to vanish and pretend it doesn't exist. You'll need to decide if its worth the points to fix a complication, or not through trial and error.
4b Positive Complications. This complication is always nice to get. It will boost progress or Quality. Sometimes its bets to let the complication run for 4 turns and cure it with a high or moderate quality boost in the last 5th round. You need to see what works best for you.
To explain this a bit you need to understand crafting a bit more.
In the beginning you get 2000 action points . Each move you make will further you through 4 steps of crafting.
To understand this you need to understand the 4 crafting steps:
Crafting Steps 1 - 4:
-1- A starting step where you decide which resource you gonna use, later on you decide color, enhancements and quantity here too.s
You can use quality refined resources here to start with better quality with 18% max for a Grade A item
Note: You only have 2 choices doing Work Orders, you must use Harvested items when you build items for sale or to give to others.
It also is what we harvest for and can add upgrades to to make a unique "buffed" item. But using harvested resources in a work order can boost it upwards of 18% in quality from the start.
Pay attention Stage 2 and 3 can be switched, depends on Work Order and level.
-2- Second step is the Fuel using step usually, and you'll use your fuel components to get the fire or the loom or whatever your machine is to a stage where you can "mold/make" your product. In the beginning 2 icons will apear at later levels it can go to 3 or even more and you decide to either increase your progress or your quality on each item, usually burning fuel components, and around 100 points each use.
Pay attention to points. You will learn to gauge how many points you can burn each step without running out by the end. (If you run out shy of finishing you fail at making the item).
Note: Steps do like to change back and forth in place as you advance but the idea is always the same to manage progress with quality as you advance. Also some people prefer the fueling stage later, and pick work orders that have it in the 3rd stage so they can have a better idea of how many points they have left later in the process to effect their quality.
-3- Next step is usually a Finishing item step maybe it's Heating or heming or whatever. The process doesn't matter its the points you spend as you increase your quality without running out of points to finish. As you increase your progress, and try to move your quality you'll have a bar that says D C B A on your crafting window, thats your quality. A being the best and D being the worse. You will fill this bar as you advance your quality. Your main goal is to get to the next level of quality without using to much points that you can't finish. What I do is write down about how many points it takes to do step 3 at a certain level. Then I use step 2 to advance as much quality I can while leaving enough points for step 3 plus 100. (your step 4 is free as is your step 1 with points however you have a choice to polish your item at step 4 and that costs 100 points.
-4- If you make it here you already have succeeded in finishing the product if you have 100 points left over use the icon that costs a 100 points, do know that if you don't have 100 points you do take a small quality loss using the "free" option. The goal is to have 0 points after finishing this step. If you noticed you had a ton of points left over, try adding a few more clicks of quality next time. If you notice you came short and couldn't finish click quality a few times less.
The harder the item is the more difficulty advancing you'll have, doing something really hard you may never have points enough to get better quality and spend all your points just to succeed. Thats ok, the harder the item the more experience you get for just finishing. The easier, the only way to get good experience is good quality.
As you figure all this out, don't forget you'll be rewarded with each work order turn in. Thats with experience to level, and money. You get money, or small bags that you click and expose in your inventory items to sell, and sometimes items you can use to enhance your resources to make enchanted items. Or sometimes crafting gear you can put on to buff your abilities in crafting.
In General:
In general for work orders:
Very Easy - Grade A
Easy - Grade A or Grade B
Moderate - Grade B or Grade C
Difficult - Grade C or Grade D
Very Difficult - Grade D (possible but a single complication could cause a failure)
Crafters in this game are a friendly bunch, I had no problem finding someone to talk me through areas I didn't understand. I am by no means an expert but I'm a noob who figured out how to get going and thats what this guides for.
Theres much more involved when it comes to making useful items and learning what to build as you get past lvl 10 and then 20 but I'll leave that for future guides.
This will get you going and knowing what to do when you first log in and look to become a crafter.
You'll want to be a harvester too, which is done by a NPC who trains you how to chop a tree down and then gives you a set of tools and tool belt for harvesting along with some harvesting clothing, by doing a small chain of quests, he's usually found on the edge of a major city with trees near by. After you learn the basics he will give you the option of 2 harvesting skills and train you at both and will sell you the tools you need to do both.
A few side tips that I learned as I went:
The icons to do anything pop up below the crafting window, if you don't see what to do move anything around on your screen thats blocking the bottom of your crafting window, you may just not see the icon below as it may be a similar color to the background or a window is over it.
If you keep failing, get something easier to do, its best to finish and figure out how to craft with success rather than try and force success and instead fail over and over. Also as you get confident buy some newbie gear from the local supplier and increase your base skill stats with it, it will definitely make success easier.
