When you're on the boat and the map doesn't work, it IS scary getting stuck in a storm. The visibility range is reduced dramatically. I found myself lost with only water visible from all directions. Wasn't sure which way land was. Luckily you just get out of boat steering mode for a moment and the map fixes itself so you can reorient yourself...
