Re: InGame Naming Policy
I prefer to have some naming rules but I don't want them so strict that only "original" names are allowed. Some of these games go to far as to even restrict "normal" names such bob, john, or george. All of them perfectly "normal" names but because the gods of the game don't feel such names fit with a "fantasy" theme they restrict them which I think is absurd.
Also rule #5 is going to cause all kinds of problems. What constitutes recognizable media? Nobody familizes themselves with all media characters and celebrities. A few years ago when the Stromm server opened up on "EverQuest" I met a guy who had the name of Enix. The server didn't reject his name nor did he know that he was using the name of a company it was just a name he used because it sounded cool. Should someone be forced to change their name because they weren't familiar with some "recognizable" name.
I would also like to note that many people, myself included, are terrible at thinking up "new" names. When creating a new character I usually use "real" people names that I like; of course most of these get rejected becuase they are not considered "fantasy" enough to be allowed. Many of my names usually come from various books I have read or video games I have played which most certainally violates rule #5 and if I still can't use those I am like to end up with one of the unpronouncable names that violates rule #12.
Also don't say random name generator either as most of the names those produce suck. I am sure I am not the only one who has been forced to spend an hour or more trying to name their character because of repeated "name has been rejected, try again" messages.
A strong naming policy is fine but an anal retentive one isn't and looking over that policy again it looks like it leans towards the later. With every name being reviewed by a GM and possibly changed it seems they are putting too much effort into an idealistic naming policy which could be better put elsewhere.
Anyway I am tired right now so I am sure all of that didn't come out quite like I meant it but oh well. Hopefully you all get the message.
