Re: InGame Naming Policy
Where to begin? Hmm...
To start off, I wholeheartedly agree with every naming regulation they are supporting, and I truly hope they will be able to enforce it. Yes, some people will probably argue, "I pay my subscription every month, I should get to name my character whatever I like." My counter to that is that everyone else is paying their subscription as well, so there definitely needs to be rules regarding naming. This is a given in order to keep a handle on names getting out of hand, especially since there will be younger players playing Vanguard.
I agree that some of the names that form phrases can be rather clever and funny. However, the full span of these type names need to be outlawed because of course there will be those who introduce vulgarity into their names. I guess this is for the sake of humor or just to get a rise out of people, I don't pretend to know why people do the things they do.
I am not a strict role-player, though I used to be in my days playing a text-based rpg called DragonRealms. Vanguard has awakened some of those old habits in me and I'd rather not happen upon a cleric named Tylenol RelievesPainFast. Just kills the immersion for me.
I am thoruoughly pleased to not see a Random Name Generator upon character selection. From previous experience, I mostly attribute those "Ubijnalzz," "Gantivaaals" etc to "bot" farmers and such. I'm not saying that prohibiting the use of those nonsensical names will prevent botting, but it's a start.
Mostly this reply has just been a kudos to Sigil for their naming policy and a hearty "Huzzah!" if they can manage to enforce it. Hopefully those players that agree with it as well will help in spotting violations to preserve the immersive atmosphere in their gaming environment.
