The Lok theme from SWG had this kind of impact on me.

I look at it this way. I wouldn't watch a movie without the score, so why would I play a game without it? The music is part of the game's story, and I most often it works better than anything I'd bring in, in large part because my own music brings my own set of assocations with it, of friends, family, places I've gone and things I've done, and I'd just as soon forget about those things when I'm playing and immerse myself in that world.

Same for sound effects ... they add so much to the world and I can't imagine turning them off.
