The most amusing thing I found about FFXI was how worked up people got about changing traditions regarding it. When I imported the game and played with the Japanese (and other importers), looting always consisted of rolling for things. When something would drop, everyone rolled, even for crystals. If they were full or didn't really want it, they didn't roll. This often happened during the next battle so as to keep things running smoothly and to have something to do either during downtime or tedious battles (of which there were many).
Then when the English version was released, those folks had their own standards which involved never rolling unless it was something special that needed folks to pass on. And I mean, never, rolling. If you rolled in one of their parties, there would be at least one person yelling at you for being a loot hog.
Needless to say, there were some interesting confrontations between people of two different loot traditions
